How To Do A Cossack Squat
The cossack squat is a squat variation that is similar to a side lunge, but both feet remain on the ground throughout. The squatting leg also aims to get much deeper than is normal in a side lunge. Cossack squats are a great mobility exercise as they both strengthen and stretch almost every lower body muscle, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes, adductors, and calves. Here, Personal Trainer and Yoga Teacher Ryan shows how to do cossack squats.
How To Do A Cossack Squat
1. Start by standing with feet shoulder width apart and take a wide step out with one leg to the side. Both toes should be slightly turned out.
2. Engage your core and begin to shift your weight onto the right leg. At the same time, bend your right knee to lower your hips down into a squat, aiming to get the entire back of thigh resting on your calf. Your knee should remain line with your toes.
3. As you sit into a squat, rotate your left foot so that your toes point to the ceiling while keeping your heel on the floor.
4. Pause at the bottom of the squat. You can extend your arms forward to help balance if needed.
5. To return to standng, push through your right heel to extend your leg.
6. Repeat on the other side and alternate for desired reps.
